Frankincense (Essential Oil Spotlight)
If you don't know much about Frankincense (besides it going great in-between gold and myrrh), don't sweat it, we’re here to tell you all about it! Here at Flying Cow, it’s one of our favorite oils to use.
Frankincense is a well established oil in world history and has a myriad of uses. It has been used as an incense and in traditional medicine for a very long time. It’s been used in traditional Indian medicine to treat things such as diarrhea and vomiting, as well as other issues such as arthritis, asthma, and various skin conditions [2].
Frankincense is also a powerful astringent (helps protect skin cells) and can help reduce pore size by reducing sebum production in oily skin.
That's pretty great, but that's not all. It can also smooth the skin of irritation, reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars, and can tighten the skin. It can also help prevent signs of aging, help tackle discoloration and redness to balance skin tone.
While it can help with so many great things, what exactly is Frankincense? Well, it is a resin that comes from Boswellia trees that is native to Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and South Asia.
The “resin is secreted as a milky-white, sticky liquid when the plant is injured.” This resin is produced in different species of Boswellia–B. Serrata, B. carterii, B. frereana, and B. sacra [1].
The resin used from the different species of Boswellia gives us the different types of Frankincense. At Flying Cow, we use Carterii, Serrata, and Frereana.
-
Frankincense Carterii: When used topically, can help improve the look of mature skin ▪ Helps ease joint pain that is a result of age or overuse ▪ Smooth and rejuvenates the skin
-
Frankincense Serrata: Green, woody, and earthy scent helps promote clear and deep breathing ▪ Soothing for aching joints and inflammation and irritations
-
Frankincense Frereana: Smooths the appearance of wrinkles, scars, dry and damaged skin ▪ It can help promote natural healing of a wound or cut.
It’s no wonder why frankincense is such a beloved oil! We just can’t get enough of it at Flying Cow. It is one of our most used essential oils! Eight of our handcrafted products utilize this special ingredient - including balms and serums.
If you're interested in which products they are, we are about to lay them all out for you!
