What Is Tallow?
With its recent rise in popularity, the word tallow has been making its way into new ears. And with that, the question keeps being raised: what is tallow?
Short answer: it’s rendered animal fat.
Long answer: it’s an animal oil that has been slowly and carefully kettle-rendered from the suet of ruminant animals such as cows or sheep.
As much as it seems like the newest thing in skincare, it’s actually been used for hundreds of years. It may even be something your grandparents cook with or used topically. Those of the past enjoyed its moisturizing effect and its naturally present vitamins.
You see, tallow contains abundant natural fat-soluble vitamins (such as A, D, E, and K) and fat-soluble activators–which are found only in animal fats. These fat-soluble vitamins have naturally occurring antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is no wonder why generations before sought to make and use tallow.
What changed? If it’s so great, why would its popularity decline? The answer is simple–we humans always seem to want something new. The rise of synthetic skincare products set us down a chemically infused road and natural things, such as tallow, were labelled “of the past” and left to gather dust by the majority.
But the funny thing about us humans, is that at times we search so far ahead that it comes full circle. Tallow has been “discovered.” It’s shimmering and new and a wonderful product in skincare for those that have become aware of the effects of chemically filled products. It’s a fun new trend, like the flare jeans of the 70s that had a moment in the spotlight once again–at least until you try it.
Upon trying tallow, it suddenly shifts from a trend to a necessity. Especially if you are trying Flying Cow Tallow.
Are not all tallow balms the same? The answer is no. All tallow balms are not, in fact, created equal. When it comes to our balms, the Flying Cow difference is three-fold.
- Ingredient
We use 100% organic ingredients. We use organic, grass-fed/finished tallow, USDA certified organic essential oils, as well as oils sourced organically from small farmers who can’t afford the USDA certification but use organic farming practices, and organic unprocessed coconut oil for added benefits and that perfect Flying Cow texture.
-
Texture
Most tallows are hard and difficult to apply. We make ours light, fluffy, and pretty!
-

Each jar is handcrafted in small batches to ensure quality and freshness.
And we can’t forget variety.
Our three stores (as well as our website) boast a wide variety of tallow balms, and there's something for everyone.
For us at Flying Cow, it’s not a trend. It’s a choice on how to live–naturally and chemically free. We chose to feed and nourish our skin, and we’d love for you to join us.
